TiVo Desktop Update 2.3 brings iPod support

TiVo has now released a new Desktop Update version 2.3. Version 2.3 now costs $25 and will allow you to convert files to MPEG-4 or H.264. Basically, the new update adds support for your iPod, PSP, Treo, Nokia phone, and any other device that has support for MPEG-4 or H.264 files.

The other addition that the update provides automatic transfers of recordings to your PC overnight.

Go here for the update.

If I'm not mistaken this update has no support for Macs and only Windows 2000/XP.

You're correct that this is a Windows-only release - Mac TiVo Desktop 2.x is still 'pending'.

But one correctly - 2.3 is free. The $24.95 fee is only if you want to upgrade to TiVo Desktop Plus, which is basically the codec pack to enable transcoding to MPEG4, as well as an MPEG2 codec for watching files on the PC for those who don't have one. The fee covers the license costs for the software. But if you don't need the transcoding, or prefer another solution, you can use 2.3 for free.
