This guy, makememagazine, says, "i catch the ipods, sedate them, weigh them, tag them, then release them in wild." Not really that much description there except that I'm guessing he gathers parts and must have connections in China to get them. Then he basically assembles them in his home and sells them to unsuspecting people. Pretty interesting and pretty illegal.
